I. Classroom Information
Subject Area: Dance Arts
Grade Level: 2nd- 5th grade
Class Situation: Have studied ballet at our studio for at least one year (12), have studied ballet at another studio for at least one year (4), have studied ballet at any studio for over 5 years (3), have had no dance experience at all (4), have only had experience in other dance styles such as jazz or tap (5), have an understanding of basic ballet terminology (17), girls (15), boys (13)
II. Unit Summary
In this class, students will be introduced to basic and intermediate ballet terminology. Allowing them to build a strong foundation in regards to their knowledge of ballet this will then allow them to properly execute movements and techniques asked of them in higher level classes. The vocabulary will be taught in French and English, in order for them to have a better understanding and easier way to memorize the terms .
Class Interests: enjoy working across the floor with partners, want to incorporate lifts with the boys, favorite ballet is Swan Lake, wants to perform variation of Nutcracker for Christmas
Environment Assessment: One dance classroom, hardwood floors, ballet barres on three walls with one wall entirely covered by a mirror, large speakers in each corner of ceiling that can be connected to the teacher’s phone, no aids will be provided

Dance Goals: be able to correctly identify the corresponding english definition for each french term and perform the associated dance movement
Task: Learn English definitions for French ballet terms
Assessment: Provide an oral exam to determine whether students are able to correlate the words properly, students participate and show that they are able to understand and learn from their mistakes, make a “dance sentence” by combining different terms
Strategies: Give students flashcards to use outside of class with the terms, create songs and analogies to help correlate the terms to specific movements
