Vision Statement

We hope that all students will feel comfortable and safe within our studio. We plan to create a space in which students are not afraid to make mistakes and know that they will be supported by their instructors and their peers. Dancers at our studio will develop confidence in themselves and the ability to support their peers throughout their own journey.

Teaching Philosophy

 Lauren -  I believe teaching dance is meant to imbue students with a means of self-expression. At the end of the lesson, I expect each student to walk away with a sense of accomplishment. I strive for students to feel as though they were able to tell a story, to convey an emotion, or to share their personality through their movement. I do not wish for students to agonize over minor flaws in technique or lapses in memory of choreography. I would rather focus on the students’ ability to feel open and emotive when performing their dances. To do so, I plan to incorporate improv exercises in each lesson to allow for the student to develop their own style. By creating such a vulnerable learning environment, where students must be willing to express themselves on the dance floor, I plan to instill a nonjudgmental space where students feel safe letting go of their emotions and sharing them with the class. Unit Plan

  I. Classroom Information Subject Area: Dance Arts Grade Level: 2nd- 5th grade  Class Situation: Have studied ballet at our studio for at least one year (12), have studied ballet at another studio for at least one year (4), have studied ballet at any studio for over 5 years (3), have had no dance experience at all (4), have only had experience in other dance styles such as jazz or tap (5), have an understanding of basic ballet terminology (17), girls (15), boys (13) II. Unit Summary In this class, students will be introduced to basic and intermediate ballet terminology.  Allowing them to build a strong foundation in regards to their knowledge of ballet this will then allow them to properly execute movements and techniques asked of them in higher level classes. Ideal Studio

 Lauren -  My ideal studio would be in an isolated area with lots of surrounding nature. I'd like to have windows filling each room so student may feel as though they are outside and connected to the world around them. I would want to only have one wall with mirrors in each studio. While it can be beneficial to see the position of your body and your classmates, I also believe it is important to focus less on the physical appearance and more on the emotional expression. During classes, I would like to spend a lot of time working on improv and would encourage students to face away from the mirror. I believe this would facilitate more exploration of the body and movement without fear of "looking silly." I'd also like my student to have a rooftop meditation area where students could go to relax and relieve their stress before or after class.
